OutRAGE and BS in DFW
Wow this is has really gotten out of control. This drama that sometimes we all wish for but when its actually here we cringe so bad we can't even watch. Right now the battle between Greg "Hammer" Williams and Ben and Skin has officially heated up. Greggo posted on his "Gigantic Blog" that basically B&S had been in secret talks with Gavin Spittle (program director for The Fan) since February. Now we don't have exact date of this or confirmation that they actually did this. I guess if they had ended their contract with ESPN they were able to negotiate with The Fan. I thought it sounded strange as well that Ben and Skin would just jump ship without having a job lined up. Turns out the ESPN deal B&S were offered had harsh rating clauses and other guarantees they weren't comfortable. The biggest deal is that they didn't feel any kind of job security with ESPN. B&S had a lot of reservations about ESPN and decided it was best for them to just step away. My understanding is they had some deals on the table that never materialized so apparently it wasn't JUST The Fan.
Greggo is obviously going scorched earth now that he has been fired by all 3 sports radio stations. He believes that his time in DFW area radio is over (and it is!) so he wants to go unfiltered. Is Greggo a credible source? If you read in that blog, he admitted himself that he lied to Mike Rhyner right to his face. Yes he was on drugs and he was trying to save his job. Does he have a reason to lie about this?? Right now I haven't made my mind up but we can't truly say Greggo is 100% credible. I would say though a good amount of his blog is a true account of what happened. Those parts he has zero reason to lie about. Is he disgruntled? Of course he is but it doesn't mean he is wrong.
Now I would also like to respond to an actual problem I've had with Ben & Skin. For the most part I think they have fine sports minds and they really understand that you can't just have SPORTS ONLY show. They joke and do bits for the most part they are a very entertaining show. My only issue I've had with their show is there almost obsession of "jock sniffing". Being friends with the athletes has always rubbed me the wrong way. I think genuinely B&S are good guys and they just click with athletes but I just don't like it. The problem that I have with it is objectivity. When you become friends with athletes I believe it makes you slightly bias. B&S are good friends with Derek Holland and I think they talk him up a lot. Good pitcher? Of course he is but when you become friends I wonder if you are talking him up because you are buds or because he actually is. You can't sell your objective soul, you have to keep your integrity. Are you really gonna go have a beer with an athlete and then go on the radio a trash him? I don't think so. I will say there is an audience that thinks this is cool. They feel an extension of this but I think its a bad idea. Now I might be wrong but from what I heard, I didn't hear the amount of criticism that maybe their friends deserved. Now do some of my sports radio heroes become friends with Athletes? Yup! Bob and Dan do it, but at the end of the day, they won't get too close and they will express their feelings truthfully.
Greggo's feud with Ben and Skin at the end of the day is a little silly. Did they take his job from him? I'm not so sure. Gavin Spittle didn't like Greggo and he liked B&S more. That is what happens when PDs move in and out of stations. They want their guys and if they don't like them and the ratings aren't there, THEY ARE GONE! Did Ben and Skin do a dirty back room deal with The Fan? They might of but that is the nature of the business. It is dirty and the strong will survive. B&S know how to work the system. B&S are taking a huge risk with this deal. The Fan doesn't work out, where do they go? ESPN? Not a chance. The Ticket? They are not known to take back former personalities and there is no room for them at the time. B&S are done on the radio if this doesn't work. Will they beat Hardline in the ratings game? No chance, they just need to beat Galloway, their former ESPN buddy. Battle for 2nd will happen as long as this line up is around on the Ticket. Will you be listening? I know I will...when BaD radio and the Hardline go to break. Greggo I will give you a call one of these days. Right now he is answering all my questions right now. B&S good luck. Also I wanna say I'm very happy for Kevin Turner, former Ticket spare. Very talented guy and I wish him nothing but luck.
SIDE NOTE: it would be really nice if Ben Rogers would unblock me. He is extremely sensitive but he has blocked me TWICE now. Skin has been nothing but friendly with me even though I've dogged his blazer with a T-Shirt underneath.
